I was very encouraged by Timothy Murray’s meeting during the Feast on Trusting God. As a reminder of what trusting God looks like, he used the three worthies’ testimony as an example of what trusting God includes: (1) God is able, (2) He will deliver us, and (3) Even if He doesn’t, we will still trust. I then remembered Psalms 56:3 which says, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you!” It is a step of faith to practice this, and we may need to do it every time we are tempted to worry or be afraid. Worry should be like a red flag which once again sends the signal, “Put your trust in God!”
When I think about how Jesus provides sufficiency in all things (2 Corinthians 9:8) then we can substitute the word “afraid” for any human emotion (worried, angry, perplexed, frustrated, etc.) and put our trust in God whenever we have a need! Just as taking an object and putting it somewhere, we can take a step of faith and put or place our trust in God. It isn’t dependent on the amount of faith we think we have, but on the Person in whom we are placing our faith! Knowing who He is helps us to do this!
We sometimes hear the expression “What’s not to like?” It’s even more powerful when we think of God and say, “What’s not to trust?” Psalms 9:10 says, “And those who know your name [character] put their trust in you.” When we remember that God is Almighty, Omniscient, Omnipresent, All loving, Unchangeable, etc. we realize that He is fully worthy of our trust.
I thought of three practical ways to put our trust in God. The first is in giving when God prompts us to give. We act, knowing that God is well able to provide our future needs. We can rest fully on His promise that “I will never leave you nor forsake you” Hebrews 13:5. Even if He calls us to give our last dollar, we know that God is able to provide more.
A second one is putting our trust in God for protection in travel. We pray when we start a trip and commit our way to Him for His protection. The highways can be dangerous with a multitude of possibilities, but God is able to protect. How often he has rewarded us with safety!
Another time to put our trust in God is in keeping the Sabbath. We keep the day in quiet assurance that even though the world may be coming apart before our eyes, we know the end of the story and can actually have a foretaste of the Millennium and the peace we will experience when Jesus reigns over the whole world. The enemy wants us to think that everything is dark and hopeless, but we can smile because we know that in the end Jesus wins, so we can trust in God’s sovereignty and enjoy a day of rest!
