Don’t Fear the Unknown

What thoughts do the word CHANGE bring to your mind? For some this word brings fear of the unknown. To others it brings relief and the thought of something new and exciting. Change always brings some uncertainty and can bring anxiety. When we focus only on the unknown, we may become fearful and upset and miss the joy that something new can bring.

As we become older, it can be easier to feel fearful about the changes that may come to us. We may feel that the latest technology is leaving us behind. Or we may have more health concerns. Solomon wrote “Do not say why were the former days better than these. For you do not inquire wisely concerning this.” Never forget that God has promised to be with us all our lives. God spoke to Jacob when he was more than 100 years old, saying, “Do not fear to go down to Egypt.” This was a major move for him, but he obeyed God; he knew that God would be with him.

In Malachi 3:6 we are told “For I am the Lord, I do not change.” In a changing world it is great to know that God doesn’t change. At times change can be very difficult but we are told to fear not. We can trust God to take care of us in all the experiences and changes of life.

This reminds me of the words of the chorus from the song, Because He Lives by Bill Gaither.

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow
Because he lives, all fear is gone
Because I know He holds the future
And life is worth the living, just because He lives.
Jesus said in the sermon on the Mount, “Do not worry about tomorrow.” So, don’t fear the unknown. Remember, the future is known to God. Today, on this Sabbath, and every day, choose to trust God and to not worry about the future.
