Love for Beulah

“Beulah” means “married.” It is the new name God has promised for the land known as Canaan, Palestine, the Holy Land, or Israel (Isaiah 62:4). This is a very special land, because God calls it His.

Since the beginning, God has been interested in Beulah. This is the land He showed to Abraham, and promised to his descendants. Many powerful contacts between God and man have taken place here. When Jesus came to the earth, He lived in this land. Here He laid down His life for the salvation of the whole world. Here He rose again in triumph. It is to this land that He promises to return, and establish His government in Jerusalem. God loves this land, and desires His people to love it with Him.

God calls this land by many names.

Hebrews 11:9—The Land of Promise

Isaiah 32:13-15—The Land of My People

Ezekiel 20:38—The Land of Israel

Zechariah 2:12—The Holy Land

Ezekiel 36:5—My Land

Hosea 9:3—Jehovah’s Land

Deuteronomy 11:12—A Land that Jehovah Thy God Cares For

Jeremiah 3:19—A Pleasant Land, a Goodly Heritage

Ezekiel 20:5-6—The Glory of All Lands

Deuteronomy 8:7-9—For Jehovah thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing forth in valleys and hills; a land of wheat and barley, and vines and fig-trees and pomegranates; a land of olive-trees and honey; a land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack anything in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig copper.

God’s delight is in her, and we love her too.

Deuteronomy 11:12—A land which Jehovah thy God careth for: the eyes of Jehovah thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year.

Psalm 78:68—Mount Zion which he loved.

Isaiah 49:14-16—But Zion said, Jehovah hath forsaken me, and the Lord hath forgotten me. Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yea, these may forget, yet will not I forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.

Isaiah 62:4-5—Thou shalt be called Hephzibah, and thy land Beulah; for Jehovah delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married. For as a young man marrieth a virgin, so shall thy sons marry thee; and as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, so shall thy God rejoice over thee.

Psalm 122:6—Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
They shall prosper that love thee.

“Beulahology is the intimate knowledge of, and ability to discourse about, the precious Land married to Israel and married to Israel’s God. It is a positive passion in my soul to know every nook and corner of the Land. It brings a tenderness of spirit that is simply indescribable. Beulahology is the connecting link between theology and humanity.” —F. W. Sandford

Who makes the love of Beulah real to us?

The Spirit takes the things of Christ and declares them to us.

John 16:14—He shall take of mine, and shall declare it unto you.

Where is it?

It is in the continent of Asia, at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa. God promised an area stretching 330 miles from North to South, from the Brook of Egypt to the Entrance of Hamath. (See Numbers 34.) The land occupied by Biblical Israel covered only 150 miles, from Dan to Beersheba. Only during Solomon’s time was the full area ever ruled over by Israel, and even then it was never fully occupied. (See 1 Chronicles 13:5 and 2 Chronicles 7:8.) Today Beulah is divided among the nations of Israel, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, and Lebanon.

Beulah is more than just a place.

It represents:

God’s presence

Psalm 132:13-14—For Jehovah hath chosen Zion; He hath desired it for his habitation. This is my resting-place for ever: Here will I dwell; for I have desired it.

Psalm 68:16—Why look ye askance, ye high mountains, At the mountain which God hath desired for his abode? Yea, Jehovah will dwell in it for ever.

God’s people

1 Kings 8:36—Thy land, which thou hast given thy people for an inheritance…

Ezekiel 20:6—A land that I had searched out for them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands.

Genesis 17:8—And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land of thy sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.

Exodus 15:13,17—Thou in thy lovingkindness hast led the people whom thou hast redeemed: Thou hast guided them in thy strength to thy holy habitation...Thou wilt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance, The place, O Jehovah, which thou hast made for thee to dwell in.

A key to the world’s evangelization

Luke 24:47—And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name unto all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

Romans 11:15¾For if the casting away of them is the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?

Ezekiel 36:23—And the nations shall know that I am Jehovah, when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes.

God’s plan for the future

Isaiah 62—For Zion’s sake will I not hold my peace,
And for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest,
Until her righteousness go forth as brightness,
And her salvation as a lamp that burneth.
And the nations shall see thy righteousness,
And all kings thy glory,
And thou shalt be called by a new name,
Which the mouth of Jehovah shall name.
Thou shalt also be a crown of beauty in the hand of Jehovah,
And a royal diadem in the hand of thy God.
Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken;
Neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate:
But thou shalt be called Hephzibah,
And thy land Beulah;
For Jehovah delighteth in thee,
And thy land shall be married.
For as a young man marrieth a virgin,
So shall thy sons marry thee;
And as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, So shall thy God rejoice over thee.
I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem;
They shall never hold their peace day nor night:
Ye that are Jehovah’s remembrancers,
Take ye no rest, and give him no rest,
Till he establish, and till he make Jerusalem
A praise in the earth.
